How to tell if a BMW E90’s mileage was changed

On the BMW 3 Series E90, E91, E92 and E93, the mileage is not stored in the instrument cluster alone. The key module (CAS) keeps a copy too. If you read both with a diagnostic computer and they differ, that is a clear sign of tampering. If they match, it is a good sign, but not a guarantee.

Where does a BMW store the mileage?

On the E9x the cluster (KOMBI) shows the figure, but the car access system (CAS), the module that reads your key, records it as well. The design means swapping the cluster alone does not wipe the car’s history. Other modules, such as the engine computer (DME), log the mileage with every fault they record.

How the check works, step by step

  1. 01Plug the diagnostic computer into the OBD port under the steering wheel.
  2. 02Read the mileage from the cluster (KOMBI) and from the key module (CAS).
  3. 03Compare the two with each other and with what the dash shows.
  4. 04Look at the mileage stored with old faults in other modules. A fault logged at a higher mileage than the cluster shows is strong evidence.

Warning signs

  • The cluster and key module disagree.
  • Old faults are stored at a higher mileage than the cluster shows.
  • The service schedule stored in the car (CBS) does not fit the mileage.
  • Many faults were cleared recently, meaning someone wiped the memory before selling.

Matching figures are a good sign, not a guarantee. Some methods change both modules together, which is why we read the mileage alongside the rest of the inspection and the fault history.

Can I spot mileage tampering without a computer?

Wear on the pedals and steering wheel can hint at it, but the reliable method on an E9x is reading the mileage from the cluster and the key module and comparing them with a diagnostic computer.

If both figures match, is the car fine?

It is a good sign, not a full guarantee. We read it together with the fault history and the stored service schedule.
