What is BMW coding?
BMW coding, called تكويد in Arabic, means changing the settings of a car’s electronic modules with a computer. It is done for two reasons: to switch on features the car already has but ships with disabled, or to make the car recognise a newly fitted part. Coding is not new software; it changes existing settings and can be reverted to factory values.
Coding versus programming
Coding changes settings inside the existing software, like turning a feature on or off. Programming (flashing) loads new software onto a module. On BMWs, coding is done with NCS-Expert, programming with WinKFP, and diagnostics with ISTA and INPA.
Features you can enable on an E90 or E92
- Digital speed readout in the cluster.
- Needle sweep on start-up.
- Mirrors that fold automatically when you lock.
- Windows that open and close from the key.
- Seatbelt chime turned off or changed.
What is available depends on each car’s equipment. Mirror folding, for example, needs folding mirror motors in the first place.
Coding new parts (retrofits)
If you fit a part your car did not come with, such as LED tail lights, a screen or parking sensors, the car needs coding to recognise it without a warning in the cluster. Retrofit coding costs EGP 500 to 1,000 depending on the part, with an EGP 300 deposit.
Is coding safe?
Coding changes settings that already exist, and before any change we save a copy of the module’s settings so they can be restored. What matters is the right software, someone who understands the modules, and a charged battery during the work.

Feature unlocks are one flat-price session of EGP 500, done at your place in Cairo or Giza. You pay a 50% deposit on InstaPay and the rest after the work.

Does coding void the warranty?
E9x cars left the factory warranty years ago, and every coding change can be reverted to factory settings.

A feature-unlock session usually takes one to two hours, depending on how many features.
Can I code my car myself?
You can, but you need the right cable, the software and an understanding of the modules. A wrong module setting can disable a feature or raise faults.
